High-risk pregnancy care

As part of our commitment to providing advanced pregnancy care, Grand Strand Health’s maternal-fetal medicine program is designed to support mothers experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. Our team of caring experts is led by maternal-fetal medicine physicians (perinatologists) who are specially trained to take care of unborn babies and their mothers.

Your doctor may refer you to a maternal fetal medicine specialist if you:

  • Are 35 years old or older
  • Are pregnant with multiples
  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Have hereditary concerns
  • Have special concerns that may put you or your baby at risk

Prenatal testing

When you’re pregnant, prenatal tests give you information about you and your baby's health. They help detect any problems that could affect your baby, such as birth defects or genetic diseases. Perinatologists use the results to help you make the best decisions before and after your child is born. Doctors often recommend prenatal tests for all pregnant women, but some women will need other screening tests to check for certain problems.
